Keeping Things Simple

The weather has been gorgeous for November in the northeast. I spent the weekend outdoors away from the screens and didn't have a chance to write an entry.

Here's an old post from May before most of you were subscribed. I hope you enjoy.

Simplicity

Sometimes we make things more complicated than they need to be.

This past week, I got asked about spirulina, epigenetics, and Noom.

There are a million wellness books and apps and people get caught up and veer from simple wisdom.

If you are getting started getting healthy, forget all the nonsense.

You can do a lot focusing on 3 habits:

1. Eat real food. Fish, beef, pork, chicken, eggs, yogurt, nuts, berries, broccoli. Forget garbage that comes in a box or adds sugar.

2. Move your body almost everyday. Take walks. Jog. Peloton. Pushups. It doesn't matter.

3. Get selfish as hell about sleep. Put your phone in a drawer outside your bedroom. Get it dark and quiet. Don’t worry about “hours.” If you wake up refreshed, you’re good.

That’s what you need for a good start.

Here’s a pic of Pete Rose:

Here are some links related to the discussion above for those who absolutely must go down rabbit holes:

1. If you must read a book about nutrition, this one by Ted Naiman is probably all you’ll ever need.

2. Here’s a good post from Everyday Health with some benefits of exercise including solid hyperlinks to more info and scientific evidence.

3. Sleep hygiene is a thing. This is a helpful discussion about it from the kids at Harvard.

4. The phone, blue light and sleeping via Sleep dot org.

5. Here’s a thread from my pal Allan who is an ultra-marathoner. It’s a sweet meditation and you can replace “running” with anything you’re into.
